Sand Mountain Reporter Lady Bulldogs win in double OT; GHS boys fall From staff reports Published December 19, 2009 GERALDINE — The Geraldine varsity girls extended their winning streak to six games by beating rival Fyffe 56-50 in double overtime Tuesday at Wendell Nix Gymnasium.The Lady Bulldogs (8-3) led 17-9 and 29-24 at the first-half rest stops, but Fyffe (6-5) rallied to grab a 39-36 lead after three periods. Fyffe’s Whitney Brown made a free throw with 21.5 seconds left to tie the game 48-48 and force overtime. Tiffany Simpson scored to give Fyffe a 50-48 lead with 3:34 left in the first overtime. Geraldine’s Kristen White tied it with two free throws with 1:09 left, forcing a second extra period. The Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good at 51-50 on a White free throw with 2:48 left in the second overtime. White was 5-of-6 from the foul line in the second extra period. White delivered another terrific performance, finishing with 30 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. She converted 16-of-22 free throws. Caitlyn Roe scored 10 points for GHS. Alanna Smith contributed nine points and 11 rebounds. Meagan Williams’ 10 points paced Fyffe. Both Whitney Brown and Sydney Brooks tossed in nine. VARSITY BOYS Fyffe 66, Geraldine 55: Class 2A, No. 3 Fyffe held off the Bulldogs on Tuesday night. Fyffe (7-1) was in front 19-11 and 37-21 at the first-half stops. Geraldine (4-5) cut the margin to 47-36 on a Daniel McClendon basket with 1:18 left in the third, but Fyffe’s Taylor Thrash answered with a 3-pointer, pushing the margin back to 50-36. The Bulldogs rallied, pulling within 60-54 on a Matthew Cole free throw with 2:14 to go. Cody Hurley and Ryan Tramel both made a pair of free throws for Fyffe to give them a 64-54 advantage with 1:25 remaining. Tyler Malone closed with 12 points to lead the Dogs. Cole collected 10 points and six assists. Jake Richey scored 10 points. Four Red Devils reached double figures — Thrash 19, Jesse Martin 13 and both Josh Barksdale and Jesse Townsel 10. Martin cleared seven rebounds. Geraldine plays host to Pisgah today. There will be five games,with the freshman boys contest tipping off at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will travel to Ider on Tuesday.
