Southern Union may have finished fifth in the Alabama Community College Conference Volleyball State Tournament, but two of its team members, both Guntersville High School graduates, took high honors at the tournament’s awards ceremony following the conclusion of play Nov. 8.
Caroline Price, a Southern Union freshman, was named ACCC Volleyball Player of the Year in voting by the conference’s coaches.
She and Emily Johnson, also a freshman and GHS graduate, were named to the NJCAA Region XXII all-region team.
Price was nationally ranked at No. 20 in the NJCAA Division I volleyball rankings for kills per set.
“I’m so happy to be a part of the Lady Bisons volleyball team this season, and I credit Coach (Jimmy) Latta and the GHS volleyball program for all they’ve done for me to move forward to college level play with Coach (Jenny) Hayes,” Price said.
“I’m thankful to my family, and to God for these honors.”
Johnson shared sentiments similar to her teammate.
“It’s been awesome to play for Southern Union, and I owe a lot to my teammates and to Coach Hayes for this honor,” Johnson said.
“My family, my friends, everyone has been so supportive. The Guntersville volleyball family, especially Coach Latta, really prepared me, and I’m grateful for that.”
Southern Union volleyball coach Jenny Hayes was named ACCC Coach of the Year.
Price is the daughter of Dr. Bob and Terry Calcote, of Auburn/Guntersville, and the granddaughter of Buddy and Ann Davidson, of Guntersville.
Johnson is the daughter of Earl and Connie Johnson, of Guntersville, and the granddaughter of Smitty and Virginia Johnson, of Guntersville, and Charles and Gladys Tolleson, of Gadsden.
Johnson’s sister, Savannah, is a freshman volleyball player at Guntersville High School.
