Rivals collide

The Boaz varsity boys basketball team won its third straight game Tuesday night, beating rival Guntersville 79-57 at Pirate Gym.

Boaz (3-1) is participating in the Holly Pond Thanksgiving Tournament this weekend.

The Wildcats (1-2) will play host to Jacksonville tonight at 6.

The Pirates led Guntersville 22-17, 37-27 and 53-45 at the rest stops.

BHS outscored the Cats 26-12 in the fourth quarter. Nine different Pirates contributed points in the final eight minutes.

Ethan Baker tossed in 18 points, leading a quartet of Pirates who closed in double figures. He sank three 3-pointers.

Joseph Wright scored 15 and both Drew Phillips and Justin McCormick 13. Phillips had three treys.

Collin Langley netted eight, Caleb Brown five and Bryant O’Donnell, Tyler Musick and Austin Harvey all two. Colton Hunkeapillar had one.

Guntersville’s Darrel Jackson led all scorers with 21 points.

Jason Havis finished with 15, sinking five 3s.

Matt Bass scored six, both Justin Staten and Malcolm Moore five, Chandler Litchford three and Jesse Yost two.

VARSITY GIRLS

Guntersville 39, Boaz 37: The Class 4A, No. 8 Lady Wildcats remained undefeated, improving to 4-0 with Tuesday’s decision.

The Lady Pirates slipped to 2-2.

Boaz led 11-8 after a quarter, but Guntersville moved in front 20-19 at intermission.

The Lady Wildcats were up 29-24 after three periods.

Guntersville converted 15-of-23 free throws while Boaz sank just 6-of-15 attempts.

The Lady Cats’ Jerikah Madden went 7-of-8 from the foul line and scored a game-best 12 points.

Carlye Bice tossed in nine, Caroline Bridges six and both Kayla Stewart and Cati Leak four. Chloe Whitaker and Mallory Moore added two apiece.

Bice has scored 999 points in her varsity career.

Peyton Higgins netted 11 to lead Boaz’s offense. Kirsten Croghan closed with 10.

Bethany Rohlfs contributed five, Taylor Douglas four, Hannah Liverett three and both Casie Kinney and Jacie Scott two.

JR. VARSITY BOYS

Boaz 45, Guntersville 30: The Pirates improved to 4-2 with Tuesday’s victory.

Boaz was in front 13-4, 23-15 and 40-23 at the quarter breaks.

Kyle Overstreet’s 12 points paced Boaz’s attack.

Casey Wiggins contributed eight, Andrew Thompson seven, both Skylar Burns and Kody Burttram six and Will Amberson and Justin Maroney two each.

Jon Nelson and Tyler Nabors both chipped in one point.

Boaz’s junior varsity boys, junior varsity girls and freshman boys will travel to Cherokee County on Monday.
