GAYLESVILLE — Asbury forced 44 turnovers, converting them into 28 points, as it hammered Gaylesville 73-26 Tuesday night in a boys Class 1A, Area 12 contest.
The Rams (5-2, 1-1) enjoyed advantages of 8-3, 25-11 and 52-18 at the quarter breaks.
Asbury made 16 steals, led by Jonathan Newby with five. Andrew Scott, Zach Jackson and Derek McCoy each finished with two steals.
Newby’s 14 points paced three Rams in double figures.
McCoy netted 13 and Jake Mashburn 12.
Michael Upton scored eight, Jackson seven, both Dexter McClendon and Cody Zajac five, Jacob Walton four, Blake Jones three and Ezequiel Morales two.
Walton pulled down eight rebounds, McCoy seven and Newby five.
The Rams shot only 38.6 percent from the field, but they finished 12-of-17 from the free-throw line.
VARSITY GIRLS
Asbury 49, Gaylesville 38: The Lady Rams (4-3, 1-1) outscored Gaylesville 21-8 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory.
Gaylesville led 11-9 after a quarter, but the Lady Rams took a 23-22 advantage into halftime.
Gaylesville was up 30-28 at the final rest stop.
Jessica Pelham hit three 3-pointers and finished with 15 points, pacing Asbury’s attack. She cleared eight rebounds.
Destin McClendon contributed 11 points and six boards.
Jaylan Thomas posted seven points and seven rebounds, and Mikayla Hancock got five points and nine boards.
Asbury received four points and six rebounds from Hannah Childress and four points from Megan Murphy. Erica Lemaster scored two and Wendy Ball one.d
