Boaz Council OKs one-time pay raise

Published November 26, 2009

The Boaz City Council unanimously passed a one-time pay raise for all employees just in time for the holidays during a meeting Monday night at the Boaz Senior Center.

Full-time employees with one or more years of service will receive a one-time payment of $175.

City Clerk/Treasurer Jill Bright said the city employs 86 full-time employees with more than one year of service.

Part-time employees, paid on-call firefighters and full-time employees with less than a year of service will receive $125.

Bright said 26 employees will receive the $125 payment.

Resolutions

The council adopted a resolution notifying Marshall County 911 dispatch that A-Med Ambulance Service will be the primary responding agency for all emergency calls in the city limits of Boaz.

A-Med, which is based in Altoona, inked a one-year contract with the city to rent a portion of the former senior center building downtown for $200 per month, an official said.

In other business, the council adopted a resolution authorizing Walker to sign a contract with Tri-Solve, a company in Pelham that provides comprehensive analysis of all communications bills, including phones and Internet, for companies and municipalities.

The purpose of the audit is to check the accuracy of communication bills and perhaps save the city money in the future.

A Tri-Solve representative told the council in October that the company typically discovers 15 to 20 percent in savings during an audit.

Tri-Solve charges 50 percent of the credits it negotiates and 50 percent of the first year savings it finds with a municipality’s existing carriers.

Announcements

Councilman Jerry Don Sims said the Boaz Public Library is hosting a Friends of the Library half-price book sale on Tuesday.

The library is also hosting a public event following the Christmas parade on Dec. 4. The library is serving hot chocolate, milk and cookies, and hosting a reading of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” and an appearance by Santa Claus.

Activities will end about 8 p.m.

Councilman Tim McRae announced the Christmas parade will be Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m. and the city’s first-ever Christmas Extravaganza is Dec. 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

McRae said at least 50 vendors are scheduled for the downtown extravaganza, described as a smaller-scale, Christmas-themed Harvest Festival.

Walker announced all city departments will be closed today and Friday, except for the police and fire departments, to observe Thanksgiving.

Walker also noted Sims was scheduled for prostate cancer surgery Wednesday. Sims said the prognosis is positive.
