Cochran confident event will 'wow' crowd

Published December 5, 2009

With the Celebrate Albertville event only a week away, those involved in the production are in an “incredible flurry of activity,” according to Tony Cochran, chairman of Celebrate Albertville.

Performers, backstage crews and technicians will spend the week putting the final touches on their responsibilities in order to “wow” the crowd next Saturday night.

The show is going to bring many current students in the Albertville City School System together with many of the alumni.

Cochran said there was a lot of work going into the final stages because of the magnitude of some of the things the crews and performers need to pull off.

“I’m confident we will see the ‘wow’ show we are hoping for,” Cochran said.

Those who have worked closely with the show still want to keep some of the surprises a secret, but there will be a performance by Pat Upton.

Upton used to perform with the Spiral Starecase, whose hit song was “More Today Than Yesterday.”

Also, in addition to raising money for the Albertville City Schools Foundation, the Celebrate Albertville performance will leave behind equipment and experience that can be used for other productions.

For example, the event has paid for and will leave behind custom risers, cabling for supplemental lighting, along with a new supplemental electrical panel that was not part of the original design of the building.

“A lot of the money we are spending is not just gone,” Cochran said. “It will remain with that theater so the next time they have a need, they will be better equipped.”

Cochran said ticket sales were going “OK” so far, but his biggest fear is for the fine arts center to only be half-full.

There are still a number of tickets left and Cochran said some people may have been reluctant because of the price of the $100 tickets and the suggestion of wearing a tuxedo.

Cochran said he suggested people use it as their “adult prom,” but black tie attire is not required by any means.

Also, he said, “$100 might be steep, but it is going for a good cause.”

He said students participating in the event are receiving one ticket they can give to their parents.

Also, if that student is in the band or choral and sells a ticket for $100, half of that amount, or $50, goes into that student’s account to pay for their expenses to the 2011 Rose Bowl Parade.

Cochran said it was like only spending $50 because the parents would have to come up with the other $50 for the student’s trip anyway.

VIP tickets, which include admission to pre- and post-event parties at the Albertville Golf and Country Club, a chauffeured limousine ride to and from the event and other extras are $500. VIP tickets are available by phoning 891-7840 or through celebratealbertville.org.

Patron tickets are $100 and available at Vantage Bank, 407 N. Broad St. or by calling 891-7840.

Patron tickets can also be purchased from band and choir students by calling 571-0142 for the band room or 571-9602 for the choir room.
