Detectives have suspects in stolen signs case

Published December 5, 2009

Albertville detectives have seven suspects in a case involving stolen street signs and charges could be filed as soon as next week, a police spokesman said.

“We have had a break in the case of the stolen street signs,” APD Sgt. Jamie Smith said Friday. “Information was developed (Thursday) that led to the recovery of a few of the signs with information as to the whereabouts of most of the others.

“Several other items such as yard figurines and flags that were also taken during the escapade have also been recovered. The case is still under investigation.”

Smith said the seven suspects include adults and juveniles.

Albertville police Chief Benny Womack said 85 street signs were stolen and estimated 70 of the signs were taken during the long Thanksgiving weekend starting Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Officials said the aluminum signs were chiefly removed by bending them until they broke off the bracket.

Cost to replace the signs, including labor, is estimated at more than $2,000, officials said.
