Heading to nationals

Published March 18, 2010

Members of the West End Elementary School have reason to be proud of their Junior Beta Club members.

Competing in their first-ever Junior Beta Club competition in Mobile last weekend, the first year club posted a first-place win in the spelling competition and a third-place finish in special talent.

Other members competed, but did not place, in math and quiz bowl contests.

West End Junior Beta Club Sponsor Kathy Skipper said she was proud of her students and their accomplishments.

“I am so proud of all of them,” Skipper said Tuesday. It was an action-packed trip and there really wasn’t a free moment for any of them.”

The first-place finishers in group, special talent and songfest compete at the national level, while the top three finishers in each nationally recognized categories will advance to national competition in June, including West End’s Anthony Santiago, who placed first in the spelling competition.

“I wish I could take all of them,” Skipper said. “They all worked so hard.”

Joshua Mikkelsen, Alexandria Hallmark and Zackary Snead placed third in a special talent competition, with Hallmark singing Michael Jackson’s “I’ll Be There,” accompanied by Snead on guitar and Mikkelsen on piano.

“The teams that came in first and second place wrote their own songs and performed them on the piano,” Skipper said. “I think that is what hurt us. If they wouldn’t have written their own songs, I think we may have been able to beat them.”

Anthony Bockemehl competed in the math and quiz bowl competitions, but did not place.

National Junior Beta Club convention and competitions will be in Louisville, Ky., June 26-29.

Other area schools sent clubs to the state competition and some will also continue on to national competitions.

William Mark Hammonds, of Geraldine High School, placed second in colored photography and will advance to national competition, said Judy Cummings, of the National Beta Club Society.

Geraldine High School also placed second in the group talent competition and second in the campaign skit competition. They also placed first in the songfest competition, earning a spot at national competition.

Mason Holcomb, of Guntersville Middle School, placed first in the watercolors competition and will compete at the national level in June. Cadley Jackson, of Guntersville Middle School, placed first in the miscellaneous category.
