Boaz BOE takes look at P.E. training program

Published November 21, 2009

Boaz City Board of Education members received a brief audio visual presentation on HOPSports during a meeting Thursday night.

HOPSports is an interactive physical education training system designed to introduce youth to the skills that allow them to perform a wide array of exercises in sport, dance, martial arts, core drills and basic tumbling. The system also educates youth about nutritional information.

School officials are studying the system for possible implementation using funds from the Carol M. White Physical Education Program grant the school system received earlier this year.

“A big push in November was working with Beth (Hayes) and the P.E. teachers in planning for equipment they want to purchase with the Carol M. White grant funds,” Superintendent Leland Dishman said.

“Beth and the P.E. teachers have attended the state P.E. conference and visited other sites that have the program in place.”

Dishman also briefed the board on his meeting with Dr. Robert Exley, Snead State Community College President.

“I had an excellent meeting with Dr. Exley last week and discussed our continued and expanding relationship with Snead State,” Dishman said.

“Dr. Exley feels we can greatly enhance and expand dual enrollment classes and career tech classes between the two organizations.

“We are so fortunate to have such a great relationship with Snead State. I have talked with other superintendents across the state about our relationship, and they are envious.”

Dishman discussed his visit to Huntsville and Madison County Schools this week that was arranged by Boaz Middle School Principal Allen Johnson.

“I was greatly impressed with the quality of instructional program I saw at Grissom High School and Buckhorn High,” Dishman said. “The new high school facility at Huntsville High School was extraordinary.

“I especially wanted to see how the architects had connected the old and new gyms at Buckhorn together by the construction of a hallway connecting the two lobby areas, which permitted the use of both facilities at the same time through one common access point.

“It also allowed for the common use of one set of bathrooms and one concession stand. This reduced the number of personnel necessary,” he said.

“The down side of this issue for us was the fact that the hall was about 30 feet long. Given the distance between the two facilities, I do not see a way to make such a connection to our existing gym, but I’m not an architect.”

Chief Financial Officer Brian Bishop reported about a $355,000 deficit for October compared to about $485,000 during the same month last year. He said October is typically a down month since ad valorem taxes do not start arriving until November, December and January.

Bishop also reported a deficit of about $55,000 for fiscal year 2009 (Oct. 1, 2008, to Sept. 30, 2009). That figure is well below the projected deficit figure of about $147,000.

He said the school system ended the year with a balance of about $4.2 million in the bank.

Bishop said more than 60 of the 132 school systems in the state are on lines of credit to pay salaries. After back-to-back years of 11.5 percent and 7.5 percent proration, Bishop said officials are predicting 75 percent of school systems will have to borrow money if schools face proration again next year.

Transportation supervisor Walker Segars reported a new bus with air conditioning is expected to arrive in January. Segars said Boaz will have nine buses on the road with air conditioning and four or five buses that run regular routes without air conditioning when the new bus arrives.

In other business, the board approved the following personnel actions:

• Employments: Annette Glasscock, homebound teacher; Anastasia Hughes, homebound teacher; Marie McCollum, First Class pre-kindergarten teacher; Kim Mason, First Class pre-kindergarten teaching assistant; Beverly Seay, half-day bus driver; Rissa Parrish, homebound teacher; and Christina Mays, Alabama High School Graduation Exam tutor.

• Leave of absence: Patricia Bates, Boaz High School teacher, for six weeks. Janet Burton was approved to fill in for Bates through Nov. 30.
