Public hearing on Mountainboro zoning set

Published November 26, 2009

A public hearing to zone the recently annexed property in Mountainboro is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Boaz Planning Commission is holding the 6 p.m. hearing in the Mastin Conference Room at the Boaz Public Library.

The annexation of Mountainboro into the Boaz city limits was official on Aug. 14.

Boaz building inspector Don Bouldin said the city is required by ordinance to zone the property.

“The public hearing is about getting public input,” Bouldin said. “Anybody can be there. All property owners affected were sent a letter according to how their property was listed with the revenue office in Etowah County.”

Bouldin said the Mountainboro area likely will be zoned into agricultural, business and residential districts.

“Most of the time, property is zoned whatever the zoning is for the surrounding property, so it will fit in with existing zoning,” Bouldin said.

Once Tuesday’s public hearing is complete, the commission will decide what to recommend to the Boaz City Council.

“The council will then hold its own public hearing and get input there,” Bouldin said. “Then the council will put it on its agenda and vote whether to adopt the zoning map.”

Bouldin said the process involved “a lot of paperwork” but “everything’s run smooth so far.”
