Sardis secures pair of victories

Published December 15, 2009

The Sardis varsity boys basketball team improved to 7-4 overall by winning a pair of games over the weekend.

Sardis 60, Holly Pond 56: The Lions improved to 2-1 in the Class 3A, Area 13 standings by corralling the Broncos on Friday.

Sardis led 15-14, 26-24 and 40-38 at the rest stops.

“We won an extremely tough game against Holly Pond,” said Sardis head coach Tracy Cheek.

“It was very tight throughout, with the largest lead being six. We shot free throws really well and defended exceptionally well. These two things allowed us to win the game.”

Cody Gardner, of Sardis, led all scorers with 22 points.

Aaron Champion tossed in eight, both Jeremy East and Jeremey Hallmark seven and Sean Brehm and Brandon Walter six each. Paton Jones added four.

“Cody gave us great leadership and battled through a tough shooting night, but he was solid with a 10-of-12 effort on the free-throw line,” Cheek said.

“Aaron Champion sparked us off the bench with solid guard play.”

The Lions played without starter Jerryn Harris, who was sidelined due to an ankle injury.

Sardis 74, Gaston 63: The Lions received 20 points from Gardner, 13 from East and 11 from Hallmark as they defeated their Etowah County rival Saturday night.

Brehm contributed nine points, Champion seven, Walter six, David Hinton four and both Tylor White and Jones two for Sardis.

Sardis was up 18-10, 33-18 and 51-41 at the quarter breaks.

“We got ta total team effort in the victory over Gaston,” Cheek said. “We played extremely well on a back-to-back night. The only thing we did not do well was shoot first-half free throws (7-of-21).

“Cody played his best overall game of the season, and Jeremy East played exceptionally well on offense. He is a great defender but gave us a boost on offense tonight.

“Jeremey Hallmark played really well off the bench tonight.

“We have had several different players step up and make plays during the season, and that is exactly what you want in a team.

“This win assured us of no worse than a number three seed in the county tournament in January.

“The final seed will be determined after the Southside game here on Monday. We could be the one, two or three depending on the outcome.”
