Buckets of hope

Published February 20, 2010

Haitians are still struggling to recover from two earthquakes in January. Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Albertville hopes to help those in need by sending “Buckets of Hope” filled with food and prayers.

“It is a hands-on approach we as a church are taking to help those in Haiti that really need our help,” said Miriam Pendergrass, the administrative assistant for Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Each bucket will contain a set list of items, including rice, cooking oil, beans, flour, sugar, spaghetti and peanut butter, all packaged in a reusable 5-gallon bucket.

For between $20 and $50, families, businesses and others can put together a fully stocked bucket and pay for shipping costs.

The food inside should feed a family of four for one week.

Participants are asked not to stray from the prescribed list of items and not to make substitutions. The list is to ensure the buckets clear customs quickly, thereby getting the much-needed relief to Haiti faster.

“Our Women’s Missionary Union decided this is something we should do,” Pendergrass said. “Thus far, we haven’t had much of a response, but our display has only been up (a week). We hope to get buckets coming in this weekend.”

All buckets must be brought to the church no later than March 5. From the church, the donations will be taken to the Etowah Baptist Association for shipment to Haiti.

“This is something quick, easy, fun and so, so needed for those people in Haiti,” Pendergrass said. “You see such pictures on the news of what they are going through and you just want to help. This is one way families can help.”

Pendergrass said the church is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. Call 593-3552 for more information or directions to the church.
