Sardis City leaders OK plan overhaul zoning
Published October 8, 2009
SARDIS CITY — Sardis City leaders unanimously approved a nearly $30,000 plan to overhaul and update the town’s zoning and mapping during a council meeting Monday night.
The town plans to enter into a contract with East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission to develop a long-range land-use plan, zone ordinance and map, subdivision regulations, and creation of a Geographic Information System, or GIS.
The total cost of the proposal is $57,500. The town’s share would be half — $28,750. East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission would pay the other half.
The project would be phased in over three years.
“What we have is so badly outdated,” Sardis City Mayor Terry Stephens told the council Monday. “I think it’s imperative we do it. We’ll just have to find the money.”
Officials said payments could be meted out over the three years.
Sardis City Clerk Doug Gamblin said the town last adopted a zoning plan in 1982 with minor updates over the past 27 years.
“As we develop this comprehensive long-range plan, we’ll be asking for community input and involvement,” Gamblin said. “This comprehensive plan will cover zoning, subdivision regulations, building permits and long-range land use.”
Softball team honored
The mayor and town council honored the Sardis All-Stars 10-and-under softball team with certificates of appreciation and a pizza party after the meeting Monday.
The girls won district and state Dizzy Dean championships, and finished fifth in the World Series at Southaven, Miss., this summer.
Team members are Bailey White, Madelyn Gazaway, Rylee Veal, Lauryn Noojin, Destiney Butts, Madison Murray, Zayne Cannon, Devin Holsonback, Gabee Mashburn, Claudia Morris, Tiffany Morrison and Meghan Hall.
Coaches are Greg Noojin, Donnie Murray, Wade Mashburn and Mike Gardner.
White was chosen most valuable player of the state tournament, and Gazaway was selected to the World Series all-tournament team.
