Whole Backstage tackles relationship humor

Published March 11, 2010

How many times have you met someone only to realize later that he or she would be perfect if only they changed one or two things about themselves?

Anyone who has been in love or in a serious relationship will appreciate the humor of this weekend’s Whole Backstage Theatre production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!”

On stage for one weekend only, beginning tonight, the play will give actors a workout and have the audience rolling in the aisles with laughter.

“What I like most about this show is that anyone who has been married, in love or in a relationship will relate to just about everything in this show,” said cast member and co-director Chris Carter.

The four-member cast, comprised of Carter, Diane DuBoise and Chris and Kayla Harper, play the parts of at least 10 different couples during the hilarious musical revue. The show is based on a book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro and music by Jimmy Roberts.

“We just got done doing ‘Leading Ladies’ about three weeks ago,” Kayla Harper said. “We have been hitting this show just about every night since then.”

The production is a celebration of the mating game and takes on the truths and myths behind the contemporary conundrum known as “the relationship.”

Act I explores the journey from dating and waiting to love and marriage while Act II reveals the agonies and triumphs of in-laws and newborns, trips in the family car and pick-up techniques of the geriatric set.

The revue pays tribute to those who have loved and lost, to those who have fallen on their faces at the portal of romance to those who have dared to ask, “Say, what are you doing Saturday night?”

The music is provided by Bryan Underwood on piano and Bob Larkin on the violin.

Carter likens the fast-paced production to “Saturday Night Live.”

“This show is all vignettes and skits. You don’t have to follow every piece to keep up with the show. It is all funny in its own way,” Carter said.

Due to some of the suggestive discussions between characters and language, the show has a “PG-13” rating, Carter said.

“It’s not raunchy or anything, but some people may not appreciate their children seeing or hearing some of what we talk about in the show,” he said.

Performances are March 11-13 at 7 p.m. and March 14 at 2 p.m. Tickets are available in advance by calling 582-7469 or at the door if any remain.
