Pirates first baseman chooses Calhoun

Published January 17, 2008

The contributions of Logan Remson were critical to the Boaz baseball program achieving record-setting success in 2007.

Remson received the Pirates’ best hitter award, batting .387 and leading the team in hits, RBIs and runs while helping them win 30 games, an area championship and reach the Class 4A state semifinals.

Tuesday morning, Remson provided the first highlight of the Pirates’ new campaign by signing a scholarship with Calhoun Community College in Decatur.

Remson was the Warhawks’ initial signee in their class of 2008. He follows in the footsteps of former Pirates Jeremy Vinyard and Blake Douglas, who inked with Calhoun last year.

Vinyard signed a contract after being drafted by the Cincinnati Reds last June.

“They have a great program, and I knew that, and Blake is down there, so that had a lot to do with my decision. I’m just looking forward to it,” said Remson, who has started at first base for the Pirates since his freshman season.

The Warhawks finished 41-17 in 2007 and were ranked as high as third in the national poll.

“Logan has a good bat and we’re looking for him to come in and probably hit (number) three or four for us,” said Jim Morrill, Calhoun’s head coach. “That’s what we expect. Whether he does it or not is up to him. We think very highly of him.”

The Warhawks will have an opening at first base in 2009, and Remson understands he will have to earn the job.

“I’m sure there’ll be some competition for it. I’ll have to win it, that’s just part of it,” he said.

“My hitting is the strongest part of my game. I need to work on my arm, that’s what Coach Morrill tells me.”

Signing with Calhoun allows Remson to realize his dream of playing college baseball.

Playing professionally “hasn’t crossed my mind yet,” Remson said, but he is hopeful to continue his career at a four-year institution following Calhoun.

Morrill is a fan of the Pirate program.

“Coach (Nickey) Dixon does a great job,” Morrill said. “Any kid we get out of this program we know is going to work hard for us and compete and give us all they can. That’s all we ask.”

Dixon praised Remson in front of his family, teammates and others gathered for the signing ceremony in the BHS library.

“Logan has a quick bat, great speed, solid arm and an outstanding glove,” Dixon said.

“He always hustles, always listens and always shows respect. He is one of the most coachable kids I have ever been around.

“Logan has been raised well, and that is a tribute to his parents, Rita and Matt.

“He doesn’t say a lot, but he doesn’t have to. He is well-respected by his teammates, coaches and peers. He exemplifies the expression ‘Team player.’”

Remson is excited about the Pirates’ potential in 2008.

“We’ll have to have some people step up and play in some big games for us,” he said.

“I’m going to have to be more of a leader this year because we had great leaders last year.”
