Sardis City lets check

Published October 27, 2009

SARDIS CITY — Sardis City officials released a nearly $70,000 check Thursday to a contractor working on water line upgrades.

The city had held the check to ensure the contractor — Bedwell & Whorton Construction, of Rainbow City — cleaned up some areas.

“The reason we held it is we kept getting complaints from different residents about the cleanup,” Sardis City Clerk Doug Gamblin said. “I toured with the engineering firm and consultants and came up with a list of items that needed to be taken care of before we released the check.

“In the contractor’s defense, this has been an awful year for rain. In the past few days it’s been nice, and they’ve been out there working on it.”

A spokeswoman for Bedwell & Whorton said Thursday, “Cleanup is complete on about 40 percent of the jobs, and the remainder not completed due to the weather will be completed as soon as weather permits.”

Residents attending a Sardis City Water Department Board meeting had complained about leftover chert rocks in their yards and damage to property.

Board members told residents the recent rains had delayed the project, particularly the cleanup phase.

The project is part of a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant program to upgrade lines from 2 inches to 6 inches, giving customers increased volume and fire protection.
