Douglas band fundraiser set for Nov. 6-7

Published October 31, 2009

The Etowah County Coon Hunters Association is sponsoring a fundraiser to help the Pride of Douglas Eagle Band pay for new uniforms.

The event is scheduled Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Rock Springs community center on Nixon Chapel Road. The public is invited. Dinner will be served at 4:30 p.m. both days with the deadline to enter the hunts at 7 p.m. A donation of at least $5 for the dinner is recommended. All proceeds benefit the Douglas band.

Officials said the hunts will take place all over Marshall County and features a minimum $250 purse. For hunt information, call Robert Ware at 891-3269.

“For many years in the past this association has given a scholarship, but when they heard we needed funding for the uniforms, they decided by holding an event and donating the money to the band, they would be helping more than one child,” said Stephanie McGeorge, parliamentarian/fundraising chair for the Douglas band boosters.

The Pride of Douglas Eagle Band is celebrating its 30th year this season and the band purchased 85 new uniforms, debuting them during the school’s football opener against Brindlee Mountain on Aug. 28.

The uniforms cost $372.27 each, bringing the total price to more than $30,000. Doug Brasell, director of bands at the school, said the band still owes about $20,000.

“I’d like to personally thank these very special people — our booster officers, bookkeeper, principal, superintendent, chief financial officer and board members — who were instrumental in helping us with the uniforms, for helping our band and securing the means necessary to fund our uniforms,” Brasell said. “I’d especially like to mention a huge thank-you to all of our band parents and students for continuing to work hard to help raise not only funds for our uniforms and band needs, but the continued support of the vision for our program.”

The band booster officers are Sherrill Jolley, president; Paula Terrell, vice president; Angela Word, secretary; Brenda Harris, treasurer; and McGeorge.

Douglas High School principal is Sarah Mitchell and assistant principal is Tom Yarbrough.

Marshall County Schools superintendent is Tim Nabors, chief financial officer is Laura Smith and school bookkeeper is Melba Kinney.

Board members are A.L. Bonds, Bill Ingram, Ed Wright, Frank Reed and Terry Kennamer.

Etowah County Coon Hunters Association president is Tony Windsor and vice president is Wesley Loggins.

McGeorge said she knows next Saturday is college football game day.

“It would be very easy to pick up a hot meal and not have to worry with prep time and cleanup that day for game lovers, and would benefit the kids as well,” McGeorge said.

More band news

The Pride of Douglas Eagle Band is busier than ever as football season ends, traveling to Troy today to perform with 36 other bands and the Troy University “Sound of the South” Marching Band at halftime of the University of Louisiana-Monroe at Troy football game.

“This is a mass band that takes up the entire field from corner to corner,” Brasell said. “It will perform Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and one of our state favorites ‘My Home’s in Alabama.’

“After this weekend, our band will transition to concert and jazz band to prepare for our annual Christmas concert. We also will have a number of students who will be participating in various university honor bands over the next few months as well as those who are auditioning for our district and state all-state bands.

“Many people think band ends when football is over, but it doesn’t. It only gets busier.”
