Serving up some changes

Published November 28, 2009

The AHSAA has released the volleyball alignment for the 2010-12 classification period.

Volleyball will feature regular-season area play and postseason area tournaments, followed by regional tournaments and substate matches leading up to the Elite Eight in Pelham.

Areas for the teams in The Reporter’s coverage zone are:

Class 2A, Area 11: West End, Pleasant Valley, Sand Rock and Westbrook Christian

Class 2A, Area 12: Asbury, Fyffe, Ider and Section

Class 3A, Area 11: Geraldine, Sardis, Pisgah, Plainview and Sylvania

Class 4A, Area 11: Douglas, Locust Fork, Oneonta and Springville

Class 4A, Area 12: Crossville, Guntersville, DAR and North Jackson

Class 5A, Area 11: Albertville, Boaz, Etowah and Southside

Crossville moves up to 4A next season and joins an area with 4A state champion Guntersville, which has won 11 straight area tournament championships.

The Lady Wildcats will return such key players as Cati Leak, Taylor Gibson and the Moore sisters, Meredith and Mallory.

Leak was the most valuable player of the 2009 4A state tournament.

Geraldine will reclassify from 2A to 3A. The Lady Bulldogs have captured 11 area tourney crowns in the past 12 seasons.

Geraldine advanced to the 2A Final Four in 2009.

Boaz, which posted the best season in school history this year, will have the same area opponents.

The Lady Pirates beat Southside to claim their first area tourney crown.
