Boaz BOE implements paperless system

Published July 27, 2010

The Boaz City School Board of Education led the way in technology with a new paperless system implemented for the first time at Thursday’s board meeting.

“It’s so nice not to have that pile of paper,” said Alan Perry, board member.

Perry said he and former superintendent Leland Dishman began discussing a paperless system last year. He said they considered using laptops, but wasn’t sure it was the best idea because laptops are a little cumbersome. Then Apple Inc. released the new iPad.

“These came out and were perfect,” Perry said. “Apple solved all our problems.”

In other news, Brian Bishop, chief financial officer for the school system, reported a deficit of $651,588.70 for the month, mostly due to a large bond payment. He also reported a surplus of $185,215.10 for the year to date, leaving a current balance of $4,297,000.

Bishop said due to seven and a half percent proration, it is expected the system will need to use money in the reserve.

“We’ve budgeted for up to $300,000,” Bishop said. “But hopefully we won’t have to use that much.”

The board also approved an amendment to the Strategic Plan for Wellness Policy that allows diet soft drinks in the high school.

“We over-interpreted the state laws,” said Brandy Hubbard, child nutrition director. “We restricted a little too much.”

In 2006, the system removed carbonated beverages from all Boaz City schools. Hubbard said the rule caused the school to lose too much money.

She said they will allow soft drinks in accordance with state law, which is drinks of 20 ounces or less and no more than 25 calories.

“It’s basically just diet drinks,” she said. “And it will only be in the high school. No change will occur in the other schools.”

In other business, the board approved bids to the following companies:

• Coca-Cola for beverages and beverage equipment;

• Merita for bread service;
