Leader of the pack

Published July 18, 2009

Boaz High School Band Boosters and members of the community welcomed Alex Stephenson as their new band director Thursday evening.

In a special public meet-and-greet session, Stephenson laid out his plans for the band and its upcoming football season halftime show.

“I have some pretty high expectations for this band and we will be working really hard this year,” he said.

I’m really excited to be part of the Boaz band. I see a lot of potential here and I’m happy to have the opportunity to be part of it.”

Stephenson, 30, is a graduate of Susan Moore High School and has served the past seven years at Cleveland High School as band director. He and his wife, Amber, plan to remain on the family farm in Cleveland.

Stephenson said his plans for the upcoming football halftime show are ambitious and will include opening to “Back In Black,” a percussion feature of “Any Way You Want It,” an auxiliary feature of “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” before closing with “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

Boaz Mayor Tim Walker said he looked forward to seeing what he can do.

“Our band is about excitement ... it’s about the kids first and foremost. Our band is a definite part of our community. We do all kinds of things where our band is just as much a part of the festivities as the football team is,” Walker said.

“This is an exciting time for our school and our band.”

Stephenson said he hoped the transition into his new position would be as smooth as possible.

“For better or worse, I will be doing some things differently. I am asking everyone to be flexible and be ready to work, because we will be working hard,” he said.

“I am old enough and have been doing this for enough years that I know I won’t make everyone happy. But I am going to apologize for that right now and move on. What I will be doing is what is best for the band.”
