A’ville to hold ‘Idol’ competition

Published March 9, 2010

Alabama is hosting one big yearlong party, and Gov. Riley is kicking it off today.

Riley has issued an open invitation for former residents and visitors to come and experience the best of Alabama this year during the Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns celebration.

Albertville is gearing up for its celebration July 1-3.

As part of the festivities, the city is hosting an Albertville Idol competition open to the first 100 entries.

Entry forms are due no later than June 1 and can be obtained on the city’s Web site, www.cityofalbertville.com.

The application asks for the song lyrics that will be performed and states music with profanity or sexually explicit lyrics will not be accepted.

Contestants are responsible for providing accompanying music or they will have to perform a cappella.

The competition is open to currently enrolled students ages 21 and under.

There will be a round of preliminary competitions, one on June 15 and the other on June 22, before the main performance on July 3.

Contestants will be notified when to show up for the preliminary round and they are expected to perform for one minute in front of judges.

Those making it to the finals will be notified by June 22 and asked to perform for two minutes on the Main Stage at the Small Towns and Downtowns Festival.

A group of judges will select the top three singers and they will be asked to perform again, except this time the audience will vote and choose the winner.

The winner will receive a $250 cash prize if they are in college to help pay for school, or a $250 savings bond for non-college age students.

Contest officials stress this contest is in no way associated with “American Idol,” the Fox network or their affiliates.
