Seeing double
Published October 4, 2008
Big Spring Lake Kindergarten School has seen thousands of students file through the doors. This year, they are seeing double.
Big Spring Lake is home to eight sets of twin students. Only one set is boy/girl; two sets are girls; the rest, boys.
Legend has it the school was home to a dozen sets of twins at one time, but no one has been able to find conclusive, documented proof, said current BSLK Principal Tracy Penney.
“This is, by far, the most I have seen in the school at one time,” she said with a laugh.
As the 16 children gathered in the school office, most of the children paired up immediately with their twin. The pairing is a common occurrence, said counselor Deidra Tidwell.
“Some of them start the school year very shy, talking and staying with just each other. As the year goes on, they usually start to open up, make new friends, and begin to talk more freely to others,” Tidwell said.
The 2008-09 twins include Corey and Tony Hansard, Fiorela and Betzaida Lopez, Jerome and Jrevone Ligor, Luz Maria and Luz Darlin Antonio-Diaz, Andrew and Hannah Rodgers, Karlos and Ruben Serna, Austin and Nathan Stewart and George Floyd Dobbins IV and V (commonly referred to as Joel and Evan).
Holding tightly to each other’s hands, Luz Maria and Luz Darlin led the group to the playground’s jungle gym to pose for a photo. The pair, along with Fiorela and Betzaida, held hands throughout most of the photo session.
Dressed in identical Spiderman shorts outfits, Nathan and Austin joked they never tried to trick their parents into believing one was the other, asking instead “Why would we do that?”
Sporting the same dark-colored boots and similarly styled plaid shirts, Joel and Evan said having the same boots was easy.
“Mom knows whose boots are whose,” Evan said. “I don’t know.”
Joel said, though, their bicycles sport different color schemes.
“Mine have silver handlebars and his have black handlebars. They are different so we don’t argue,” he said.
Hannah and Andrew said sharing a birthday is usually fun.
“I get girl presents and he gets boy stuff,” she said seriously. “Sometimes, I act like a boy and play with his stuff.”
Ruben and Karlos said having someone in the house that looks just like you is fun.
“I always play with him. We play lots of games and read a lot of books,” Ruben said.
At the beginning of the school year, parents are given the option of splitting up twins into different classrooms, or not. This year, only two sets of parents chose to keep siblings together.
In 2006, BSLK was home to six sets of twins. Typically, BSLK sees one or two sets of twins in any given year.
