Geraldine reaches semifinals

Published October 29, 2009

PELHAM — Fifth-ranked Geraldine beat Leroy 25-16, 25-15, 25-22 in the Class 2A Elite Eight Volleyball quarterfinals Wednesday morning at the Pelham Civic Complex.

The Lady Bulldogs (48-16) lost to top-ranked Addison (68-3) 25-10, 25-16, 25-11 in the semifinals Wednesday night.

Addison whipped Shades Mountain Christian 25-17, 25-8, 25-5 in the quarterfinals.

“We played really well in games one and two against Leroy,” said Geraldine head coach Cristie Brothers.

“We started out pretty strong in game three and then kind of got pulled into a game that we’re not comfortable with.

“We kind of got pulled into tipping too much and some things that we’re not very good at. We got taken out of the system.

“I felt Kristen White played really solid. Stephanie Andrews and Alanna (Smith) both had a lot of chemistry together early in the offense.”

Addison will play the Lexington-Sand Rock winner in the 2A championship game today at 9 a.m.

No. 3 Lexington topped No. 4 Ohatchee 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 in the quarterfinals.

In Wednesday’s other quarterfinal match, No. 6 Sand Rock beat No. 9 Isabella 25-14, 25-11, 25-10.

Lexington is the defending 2A state champion. The Bears defeated Addison in the 2008 finals.

Geraldine is making its ninth Elite Eight appearance since 1999, all of them under the direction of Brothers.
