Online tips help Marshall Sheriff’s Office

Published August 22, 2009

An online tip Thursday morning led to the arrest of a drug suspect the same day, authorities said.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office charged Kenneth Edward Smith, 46, of 102 Raintree Drive in Horton, with unlawful unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, ex-felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a concealed weapon without a permit, possession of dangerous drugs and resisting arrest.

Smith remained in jail Friday.

Sheriff’s Office investigators seized drugs, cash and a gun at the residence.

“As a result, an arrest was made and illegal drugs were taken off the streets,” Marshall County Sheriff Scott Walls said.

Walls said anonymous online tips have led to a number of arrests by his office and have proved reliable 90 percent of the time.

Anyone can visit www.marshallcosheriff.org and click on “Report Crime” at the top to fill out a form.

“I’m very pleased with it,” Walls said. “Our internet provider said that is one of his company’s most visited sites right now.”

Walls cited figures showing the Web site has had two million hits since September.

“I think the fact it’s anonymous makes people more comfortable,” Walls said. “We really don’t have a way to track it back. We follow up on every tip. Some are false, but there’s been some great cases made. Most have been good tips, and we need those tips bad.”
