Lady Pats pull away in fourth to edge Eagles

DOUGLAS — The Douglas varsity girls suffered a 65-57 loss to Marshall County rival DAR on Thursday at Loyd Berry Gym.

The Eagles (1-1) play host to Ashville today at 4:45 p.m.

DAR opened the game on fire, racing to an 11-2 advantage. The Lady Patriots were in front 19-9 at the first-quarter break.

Douglas rallied in the second period, taking a 34-32 lead. The contest was tied 34-34 at intermission.

The Eagles led by as many as five points in the third quarter and missed several chances to expand their margin.

It was tied 45-45 at the final rest stop.

DAR outscored the Eagles 20-12 in the fourth quarter.

Katelyn Marshall and Jacey Scott powered Douglas’ attack.

Marshall collected 22 points and eight rebounds while Scott finished with 20 points and nine boards.

Dannette Sims had four points and four steals. Kaylee Buchanan scored four, Amber Jones three and both Sarah Daugette and Presley Bonds two.

Leah Stahl’s 19 points paced three Lady Patriots in double figures. Both Addie Kennamer and Mallory Kirkland netted 10.

Monica Cooper tossed in nine for DAR.

Douglas outrebounded the Lady Patriots 41-33, but the Eagles committed 23 turnovers to DAR’s 13.

DHS shot 38 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. DAR converted only 24 percent of its treys.

The Eagles were 16-of-27 from the free-throw line. The Lady Patriots made 13-of-23 free throws.

Junior varsity girls: Douglas improved to 2-0 by beating the Lady Patriots 28-21 on Thursday.

Brittany Smith paced the Eagles with 10 points.

Samantha Johnson scored seven, Carlee Sims four, Amber Dunston three and both Natalie Jones and Nikki Gunter two for Douglas.
