Area couple charged with fraud

Published July 2, 2009

The use of a stolen credit card to pay for a room at the Microtel Inn in Albertville led to the arrest of a man and woman.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested Michael Ryan Akins, 26, of Boaz, and Crystal Diane Champion, 24, of Oneonta, with the assistance of Albertville police officers Monday.

Investigators discovered numerous items in the motel room, including vehicle and registration documents, reportedly stolen from several individuals in Albertville and DeKalb County.

“The pair is initially being charged with fraudulent use of a credit card, but additional charges, including some with Albertville and DeKalb County authorities are expected as the investigation continues,” said Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Heath Thomas.

As of Wednesday, Thomas said the pair was being held without bond in the Marshall County Jail.
