Super senior

Adele Woodall, of Guntersville, was all set to continue her volleyball career at Southern Union, where she would rejoin former teammate Caroline Price.

But when Price decided to transfer to Faulkner State, Woodall reconsidered her choice of schools.

And on Feb. 17, Woodall made it official by signing a scholarship with Faulkner during a ceremony in the GHS library.

Woodall and Price will be roommates at the Bay Minette school.

“I was already committed to Southern Union mainly because Caroline was there,” Woodall said.

“She decided to go there, and she talked to Coach (Ritchie Dulaney), and one night Coach just called and offered me a scholarship.”

Woodall said Dulaney was “really excited” she accepted the offer.

“I met the team and I really like the team too, and I’m really excited, especially about being down at the beach,” Woodall said. “It’s 45 minutes to an hour from Gulf Shores.”

The 6-foot Woodall, who earned all-state, all-state tournament, all-area and all-county honors for the Lady Wildcats in 2009, expects to contribute to the Sun Chiefs as a freshman.

“I’m probably going to play middle (blocker) or possibly outside (hitter),” Woodall said.

“I’d like to improve my blocking and hit the ball a little bit harder (by next season).”

Woodall, who earned four varsity letters for the Lady Wildcats, said she’s dreamed of playing college volleyball since the seventh grade.

Although she’s excited about her future at Faulkner, Woodall wouldn’t mind returning to GHS for an opportunity to win another state championship.

Woodall contributed 15 kills, three solo blocks and one block assist in Guntersville’s 18-25, 25-15, 25-22, 26-24 victory over Jacksonville in the Class 4A state finals.

Guntersville finished 62-7.

“Definitely, I wish I could have one more year where I could get another ring,” said Woodall, who predicts the Lady Wildcats will repeat as state champs in 2010.

Woodall believes a pivotal match in her career was the Marshall County Tournament finals during her sophomore season.

She earned tournament most valuable player honors after leading GHS to the championship.

“My favorite game was the championship game of county my 10th-grade year, because everybody expected Arab to win, and we just stepped it up and played awesome,” Woodall said.

“That’s when I first started really getting better.”

Woodall hopes to complete her volleyball career at a four-year college or university.

“I was thinking about maybe transferring to South Alabama and hopefully playing there,” she said.

Guntersville head coach Jimmy Latta is “really proud” for Woodall.

“Adele is a gifted athlete, and I’m very happy to know that she is going to a good program,” he said.

“Coach Ritchie (Dulaney) is a veteran coach, and I think that Faulkner State is a good fit for Adele.

“When I started working with the volleyball program, Adele was a freshman. She has had a stellar high school career that included being selected to the Elite Eight all-tournament team her junior and senior seasons, and a state runner-up and state championship during her final two seasons.

“I’m anxious to watch her progress through her college career, as I’ve watched others who have gone to the next level. It’s fun to see those kids prosper.”

Woodall’s stats

Guntersville senior Adele Woodall finished her career by helping her team win county, area, regional and state championships in the 2009 season.

She made 524 kills, 21 assists, 32 aces, 106 digs, 68 solo blocks and 99 block assists.
