‘It was a great show’
Published July 27, 2010
The sixth annual Antique Tractor & Power Show in Boaz featured 16 categories of winners, but few could beat the 97-degree heat Saturday.
“It was a great show,” Boaz Mayor Tim Walker said. “It was rather warm, but even with the heat, we had a great crowd. We had 90 tractors and other entries. It was over at about noon due to the heat and all. I think overall we had a great day, and everyone that attended had fun."
The event, held at the Boaz Farmers Market, attracted participants from all over the region, including Aaron Johnson who drove from Atlanta to attend his first tractor show.
“It’s a good chance to visit friends,” said Johnson, originally from Boaz and former pastor of an area church. “I believe it is an example of excellent civic leadership and small-town pride. It’s just good to be with folks who wave when you meet them on the road.”
Boaz resident Gerald Martin, winner of one of the slow tractor races, said he drove his 1985 1510 Ford tractor to the show, “but I didn’t have it in slow gear coming here.”
The show featured 87 entries for the 16 categories, according to Sheila Sanders, the mayor’s executive secretary.
“The show featured 19 first-time vendors showing their tractors,” Sanders noted.
Joe Criswell, of Altoona, participated in the most categories with nine entries. Greg Munsey, of Hiram, traveled the longest distance to the show, driving 120 miles. Jimmy Williams, of Albertville, edged out Boaz City Councilman Billy Faucett in the barrel race. The two men needed three races to determine the winner, Sanders said. Helen Carr, of Painter, won the skillet toss.
The winners of the 16 categories were:
• Best Restored Tractor, Don & Diane Turner, Hokes Bluff;
