Jacey Scott pumped in 15 first-half points Friday night to lead Douglas to a 50-45 win over Oneonta in a battle of two of the top young players in the area, freshman Scott and eighth-grader Destiny Elliott, of Oneonta.
The two players guarded one another through the first three quarters until Scott left the game early in the fourth after picking up her third and fourth fouls.
Scott added seven points in the third period to bring her total to 22.
Elliott finished with 20 points, including eight in the fourth quarter.
Douglas (2-3) led at all the quarter breaks: 14-5, 25-23 and 39-31.
Katelyn Marshall contributed nine points, Presley Bonds seven, Kaylee Buchanan and Brianna Farris three each and Dannette Sims, Heather Cochran and Amber Jones all two for the Eagles.
Douglas will play Plainview at noon and Fyffe at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Tournament of Champions at Plainview’s gym in Rainsville.
Fairview 58, Douglas 47: The Eagles fell in their Class 4A, Area 13 opener Nov. 19 at Loyd Berry Gym.
Fairview was in front 9-4, 24-10 and 37-30 at the rest stops.
Scott led Douglas with 15 points. Buchanan scored 10.
Cochran, Marshall and Bonds all tossed in five. Sims scored four, Sarah Daugette two and Jones one.
The Applebee’s Player of the Game was Buchanan.
The award is presented to a DHS player at every home game.
Previous winners were Jones and Latisha Thacker vs. Albertville, Marshall vs. DAR and Cochran vs. Ashville.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Douglas 38, Ashville 30: Buchanan scored 15 and both Amber Dunston and Brittany Smith 10 for the Eagles.
Nikki Gunter added two and Carlee Sims one.
Douglas 31, Fairview 23: Dunston’s 16 points powered the Eagles to victory.
Samantha Johnson scored six, Natalie Jones four, Smith three and Sims two.
Oneonta 34, Douglas 29: The Eagles suffered their first loss, falling to 4-1 on the season.
Dunston’s 11 points led DHS.
Both Sims and Smith had six, Jones three and Johnson two.
