Edith Kelley Clegg
Edith Kelley Clegg, of Locust Fork, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009, at UAB Highlands Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Mitchell Clegg, her son, James Morgan Clegg, and her sister, Fay Nell Kelley Freeman.
She is survived by her daughters, Kelley Clegg (Don) Neal, of Trussville, and Mitchie Fay Clegg (Les) Neel, of Pinson; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Neal, of Trussville; brother, James Clifton Kelley, of Boaz; sisters-in-law, Florence Stacey and Aurine (Duane) Barber, of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; niece, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and many, many friends.
A native of Marshall County, she graduated from Douglas High School and Snead Junior College. She received her BA Degree in Elementary Education from Jacksonville State College, Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama and AA Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Alabama in Birmingham.
Mrs. Clegg was an outstanding and well-loved educator of 43 years. She taught in Arab City Schools, Vinemont Junior High School, Cold Springs High School and West Point High School, in Cullman County, and at Locust Fork High School, in Blount County.
Following retirement, she continued to substitute in Blount County Schools. She was a member of the Blount County Retired Teachers, AEA and NEA.
As a charter member of the Alpha Theta Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority, she worked to promote better education for all students, not just those in her care. She served as the second president of the Alpha Theta Chapter, as well as many other positions of leadership.
She became a Golden Sister in February 2009 when Alpha Theta celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Because education was so important to her, Mrs. Clegg worked to support the Blount County Education Foundation from its very beginning. Whether it was making peanut butter cookies for the Radio-Thon, helping set up for workshops or making a monetary donation, she was always ready and willing to serve.
Mrs. Clegg was a member of the Blountsville United Methodist Church and served in many positions of leadership. She was an active member of her Sunday School class and the United Methodist Women. The children and youth of the church could always count on Mrs. Clegg to support them in all their projects.
Mrs. Clegg was a member of the Sycamore Club and enjoyed the fun and fellowship of each meeting.
As a graduate of the University of Alabama, Mrs. Clegg loved Alabama football, tailgating with family and friends through the 2008 season. This year, she tailgated in her room at Fair Haven Retirement Center.
Funeral services were Friday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m. at the Blountsville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Don Neal, Bart Bowlin, Bert Goodwin and Daryl Holt officiating. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery, in Boaz.
