County Commissioner seeking cancer treatment

Published November 21, 2009

Marshall County Commission Chairman Doug Fleming is seeking treatments related to two types of cancer.

Fleming recently had a sarcoma tumor removed from his leg. While doctors were treating him for the sarcoma tumor they also found another type of colon cancer that had metastasized in his liver.

Fleming said that when he started radiation treatment for sarcoma, his radiologist wanted him to have a couple more tests done, which led to discovery of the other cancer.

Fleming said he was looking at his treatment options with his doctors.

“I told them that God probably put this sarcoma on me so that they would find this,” Fleming said, “because we wouldn’t have known about it if they hadn’t done this.”

Fleming said the two cancers are not related.

He found the tumor in his leg that turned out to be sarcoma by simply resting his arm on his knee one day.

“I just happened to put my arm down there and I felt a little lump,” Fleming said. “It was discovered real early.”

The tumor Fleming found was about two inches in size. He said his doctors were surprised because usually the tumor is not noticed until it is much bigger.

Fleming is not sure when treatment for the colon cancer will begin.
