Chaffin announces run for Marshall BOE

Published November 14, 2009

DOUGLAS–Douglas resident Stan Chaffin said it was time for him to “step up” and seek a seat on the Marshall County Board of Education.

Chaffin will run as a Republican candidate for Board of Education Place 3.

His main goal is to expand the curriculum of the County School System, especially for high school students and bring it more in line with what you would see in larger school systems.

“Our schools are doing, in my opinion, an excellent job with the resources they have,” Chaffin said. “I mean look at our test scores.”

He said the financial situation would be the biggest issue the board of education is going to have to deal with.

“It takes money to operate a school system, and with proration and sales tax revenues like they are it is not a pretty picture,” Chaffin said. “So, we are going to face some tough times.”

He said his accounting background and his close ties with teachers will serve him well when trying to address the money issue.

“We do a really good job with our core courses, but where funding has made us a little bit lacking is in our computer classes, our (agricultural) classes … you know choral.

“Some of the schools have good programs but some of them have had to stop it.

“I would love to try some way to get our curriculum expanded.”

He said that the funds to expand the programs would have to come from somewhere and he would like to have a chance to sit down with the board’s financial officer and look over the numbers.

“There comes up that ugly word,” he said. “Well, do we want to expand or do we want to continue with the status quo.

“Nobody likes a tax increase, nobody likes any type of tax.

“But, in education they say you get what you pay for.”

Chaffin decided to run for the seat after people began to encourage him to throw his name in ring.

He said he has never been a politician and he will answer people’s question without “sugar coating,” them.

Chaffin has worked for the Douglas Water Authority for nine years and has taught accounting classes in Hanceville at Wallace State Community College for 13 years.
