SCANT CITY — Sardis saw a double-digit halftime advantage slip away in a 65-64 loss to Brindlee Mountain on Thursday in a Class 3A, Area 13 battle.

The Lions dropped to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the area standings.

Sardis was in front 18-17 and 39-28 at the first-half rest stops. The Lions’ margin was cut to 47-45 at the final break.

“We played extremely well in the first half, especially the second quarter,” said Sardis head coach Tracy Cheek.

“Cody Gardner and Brandon Walter combined for 27 points in the first half. Cody had 17 and Brandon 10.

“When we came out in the third quarter we were stone cold. We did not take anything for granted, but we could not make any shots.

“We had great play from Jerryn Harris off the bench in the fourth quarter, as he scored nine of his 11 points, including a big 3 and three free throws within the final minute and a half.

“We had the ball inside to take the lead twice in the final 45 seconds and traveled once and missed a contested shot with five seconds left.”

Sardis finished 14-of-19 from the free-throw line. Brindlee Mountain shot 18 free throws in the final period.

BMHS finished 17-of-27 from the charity stripe.

“We must find a way to seal up the game, especially in area play,” Cheek said.

“We have lost two games on the final possession. We are young and will grow from these mistakes and be ready for tournament play.”

Gardner’s 22 points led Sardis. Walter finished with 12.

Both Sean Brehm and Jeremy East collected six, Paton Jones five and Aaron Champion two.

“We have a critical area game on Friday at home against Holly Pond, and Saturday we have a home county game with Gaston,” Cheek said.

The Lions and Gaston will play four games, with the first game tipping off at 2 p.m.
