Brothers die in 2-vehicle in Guntersville

Published November 17, 2009

Two brothers died in a two-vehicle collision Friday afternoon on a residential street in Guntersville, police said.

The accident happened at 12:04 p.m. on Sunset Drive just south of Patterson Street.

Sean Pendleton, 23, of Brewton, and his brother Jonathan Pendleton, 24, of Guntersville, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Marshall County coroner Marlon Killion.

The brothers died of multiple blunt force trauma, Killion said.

Sean Pendleton was driving a Mazda RX-8 and was visiting his brother, police said.

A backseat passenger in the Pendleton vehicle, Eugene Adams, 25, of Union Grove, was hurt but his injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle, Otha Harbin, 51, of Guntersville, also suffered injuries and was transported by helicopter to Huntsville Hospital. He was listed in good condition Monday, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Harbin was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger pickup, police said.

“The Mazda was traveling south on Sunset Drive and entered a curve,” Guntersville police Chief Jim Peterson said, citing reports. “Due to speed, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which caused the vehicle to slide across the roadway and into the path of the Ranger, which was traveling in the northbound lane. The Ranger hit the Mazda in the passenger’s side.”

The speed limit at the accident site is 35 mph, police said.

“The two fatalities and Harbin were trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated,” Peterson said.

Guntersville patrolman Anthony Harbin is the investigating officer of the accident.
