BREAKING NEWS: DeKalb escapee captured

Published September 22, 2009

Authorities captured a Pennsylvania man Tuesday morning, less than 36 hours after he escaped from the DeKalb County Correctional Facility on Sunday night.

Emmitt Arlee Harris, also known as Adijah Ashanti Uhuru, surrendered without incident.

DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris said officers and deputies responded to a call about 7:17 a.m. Tuesday reporting a prowler at a residence on County Road 835 in the Pine Ridge Community of Fort Payne.

“A woman inside the residence reported having seen someone outside,” Harris said.

Fort Payne Police Department Officer Randy Arnold responded to the scene along with Deputy Red Taylor. Sheriff’s Sgt. Tony Bartley, Deputy Terry Baird and Deputy Tony Blackwell also arrived on the scene.

“Arnold observed a man identified as escaped inmate Emmitt Arlee Harris in a carport at the residence,” Harris said. “The officers approached Harris and he surrendered without incident. He was taken into custody and brought to the DeKalb County Detention Center where he remains at this time.”

Harris, 57, of South Pittsburgh, Pa., is the first inmate to escape from the DeKalb County facility since it opened in 2006, according to the sheriff’s office.

The sheriff said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives charged the escapee in 2008 as a felon in possession of a firearm, and he was sentenced to 33 months.

“We really want to express our gratitude to all the agencies that have assisted us in this search,” Harris said. “It has been astounding the amount of support we have received from our fellow officers.”

Harris cited assistance from Crossville, Geraldine, Collinsville, Fort Payne, Fyffe, Powell, Rainsville and Sylvania Police Departments, a state Agriculture and Industries Department investigator, Fort Payne Fire Department, St. Clair Correctional Facility K-9 Unit and the U.S. Marshals.

“We especially want to thank (Fort Payne Police) Commissioner Ron Ogletree and the Fort Payne Police Department for their assistance,” Harris said. “Without the working relationship our agencies have, this apprehension would likely not have been made as quickly as it was.

“Everyone involved has been working around the clock since the escape took place, and we are just thankful that Emmitt Harris was taken into custody without incident and that there were no injuries to anyone.”

The U.S. Marshals will be filing escape charges against Emmitt Harris with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the sheriff said.
