Marshall County Fair wraps up tonight

Published September 26, 2009

The mechanical bull doesn’t care if you’re a man or a woman, older or younger.

Only that you can fall fast.

Judging by Thursday night’s riders at the 52nd annual Marshall County Fair, men and women get bucked at the same speed.

“It’s a lot tougher than it looks.”

That was Keith Risner’s evaluation of the mechanical bull ride.

“When it was turning back and forth, going left to right … that’s what gets you,” said Risner, 23, of Boaz.

Betty Helms agreed.

“It’s harder than I thought,” said Helms, 38, of Albertville. “The hard part was my legs.”

Ride operator Lionel Walz said most people underestimate the bull.

“A lot of guys think they can ride, and they’re surprised the bull bucks them,” Walz said.

Jonathan Brickett thought the bull was easy and seemed perplexed when he was bucked quickly.

“I thought I could last longer,” said Brickett, 18, of Boaz.

A couple of riders had ridden a mechanical bull before, but Walz said the secret to success is “lots of practice.”

David Lee, 15, of Walnut Grove, was doing fine until the bull switched directions.

“Your hand follows through when he switches …,” he said, trying to explain the physics of falling.

Frances Brumblow was one of the ladies who tried.

“I’ve rode one before,” said Brumblow, 36, of Sardis. “The smaller the person, the easier it is to ride.”

Today is the last day of the Marshall County Fair presented by Boaz VFW Post No. 6837. It opens at 6 p.m. and is located at the Boaz VFW Fairgrounds on U.S. 431.

Admission is $3 per person ages 6 and older. Armbands will cost $18 on Thursday, and $20 on Friday and Saturday, and allow fairgoers to ride all the rides for the one price. Fairgoers can also buy individual ride tickets.

If you try the mechanical bull ride, bring $5 and a witness.

The bull takes the $5.

The witness signs the waiver with you.

It turns out the bull is not only tough as leather but has a savvy legal mind to boot.
