Commission OKs domestic violence grant

GUNTERSVILLE — The Marshall County Commission approved an annual $55,000 grant to help fund domestic violence personnel in the district attorney’s office during a meeting Monday.

The commission adds $18,333.33 to the fund for salary and benefits for three people in the office dedicated to domestic violence.

The grant pays 49 percent of an administrative assistant’s salary and benefits, 25 percent of a project director’s salary and benefits, and 45 percent of a prosecutor’s salary and benefits.

The remainder of the salaries is paid by the district attorney’s office.

In other news, Vice Chairman Tim Bollinger presided over the commission meeting because Chairman Douglas Fleming was at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tenn., undergoing surgery on a broken leg he suffered last week.

County Administrator Nancy Wilson said the surgery went well, and Fleming has begun rehab treatments.

Fleming is expected to be released to come home this week.

In other business during Monday’s meeting, the commission:

• Accepted $4,500 for the Emergency Management Agency to purchase gas-powered golf carts.

• Announced it is accepting applications for the county representative for the Marshall County Cooperative Library Board.

• Approved an agreement with the Department of Examiners of Public Accounts for the yearly audit.

• Approved travel requests for Anita McBurnett, Sahra Burgett and Nova Harrison to attend the governor’s volunteer leadership conference Aug. 18-20.

• Approved travel requests for Lee Rosser and Dan Nelson to visit the Whelen factory for training on repair and maintenance of county weather warning sirens.

• Authorized the county attorney to file a lawsuit against Fourmen Developing Company LLC for damages causing roadways to flood in Guntersville.

• Approved a renewal of certificate of deposit bid to Regions Bank.

• Approved 15 mph speed limit on Benton Lane in District 1.

• Approved 20 mph speed limit on Belair Drive in District 1.

• Approved a preliminary plat for Sparks Creek subdivision in District 1.

• Announced bids will be solicited for paving projects in the county.
