Letters to the Editor
August 31, 2010

It seems our city officials have reached a conundrum, or maybe it’s just me. Some of our leaders, if not all, want an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Deportation Center built and ordinances passed like the state of Arizona, with the help of Kris Kobach.

It was also recently announced that this city, my home, according to city officials, is close to finalizing a new venture with American Family Entertainment (AFE).

In addition, our leaders tell us it will depend a great deal on our Hispanic population, a people that have been blamed for everything except the tornado, and I have the opinion that it was even researched.

Perhaps you’ve heard. Our city officials are posing a deal with this company (AFE) to build a new theater, bowling alley and sports grill near the intersection of highways 75 and 431. This must be researched, as with with Mr. Kobach. Many questions remain unanswered concerning this venture and The Reporter has voiced so.

Am I correct in saying that our leaders want to deport all illegal Hispanics aggressively yet still are counting on the Hispanic community to support such an investment? Perhaps this is a covert plan that will include a deportation center near the movie entrance?

Let’s be clear here. What portion of this community wants to support a new theater, bowling alley and sports grill in the face of the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression? Who will ultimately pay the costs?

Too many gray areas exist with American Family Entertainment and, it appears, the top leadership of this city.

Doug Tucker, Albertville

Backs Faucett for vote against a Boaz wet-dry election

Recently there was a Letter to the Editor [8/21, Al Ramirez] disagreeing with a Boaz Christian [Billy Faucett] councilman for not supporting a resolution setting a wet/dry election date. It is difficult to understand and accept the “don’t impose your values argument” on me [that letter expressed].

According to this belief, it is wrong to vote your moral convictions unless everyone else already shares them. If the drug alcohol is not a moral problem, then Christians might as well quit trying to prevent the legalization of alcohol sales and distribution. However, we definitely should not discount moral views.

Furthermore, the Boaz Christian councilman is not the only local councilman to disapprove of legalizing liquor. There is a Guntersville Christian councilman that always votes against granting liquor licenses. Both are to be commended. We need more.

The legalization of alcohol by Boaz will only continue to increase the problem.

For example, just recently several local students were arrested for drinking in a home. The drug alcohol is alcohol whether consumed as beer, wine or bourbon whiskey.

A can of beer (12 ounces), a serving of wine (5 ounces) and a shot of distilled spirits (1.5 ounces) have exactly the same amount of alcohol. So that argument that it is ok to drink beer and wine is not supportable.

Under that option, it would be okay to use a little of meth, cocaine, etc. Currently, in California and probably some other places, they are considering legalizing marijuana.

No amount of revenue will make up for the destruction caused by the drug alcohol. It is great and needed to have churches and other agencies in Marshall County that will provide help battling addiction.

But I believe one of the best ways to help is to keep alcohol illegal and discourage drinking. When are we going to draw the line in the sand and say enough is enough?  Citizens of Boaz, vote no.

Bobby G. Nunn, Guntersville
