Letters to the Editor
March 13, 2010

I am glad Mayor Lyons is attempting to address some issues that are problematic for our city, but am not pleased with the generalizations of his remarks. I am in a quandry as to what  “depressed-wage jobs” are since at my plant (Tyson Foods) the lowest starting wage is $9.85, and three months later another raise. Then naturally there are the other trimmings such as vacation and insurance benefits that include the basic worker.

Most small towns seem to welcome large companies to locate in their area for jobs, taxes and revenue, other than just fast food outlets that can not pay these higher wages.

My company employs 600 to 800 people in Albertville, on three shifts, and I am pretty sure those same folks spend a lot of money here. I know for a fact 16 32-inch flat-paneled televisions were bought as prizes for a safety promotion from Weathers in the last two months, under the direction of upper management.

My company has also been using the E-Verify system for several years, which works, and the mayor should be able to verify that through his own channels.

 James C Maloney Jr., Albertville

Kudos to Boaz PD

I want to say thank you to Boaz police for what they have been doing on Bruce Road. I live on East Highway just off Bruce Road and they have been there every day cracking down on speeding. Looks like they are working very hard and I think anyone that lives on that road knows that. Good job Boaz PD. Thank you

Nathan Henderson, Boaz
