Letters to the Editor
March 9, 2010
It’s time to stand up for what our tax dollars are paying for. We must do something now, not tomorrow or next year. It’s past time to stand up and let our senators and congressman know the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America needs to be revised – now!
Currently the 14th Amendment, Citizenship Rights, reads, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, are subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”
This amendment is more lethal than the current situation spanning the border between the United States and Mexico. The continuing migration of illegal immigrants across the border into the United States poses an undue hardship on the American taxpayer.
The illegals have children in the United States, even though they are not here legally. The children born to them become naturalized U.S. citizens, based on this amendment.
You are paying for many benefits the illegals are receiving due to the birth of their child or children in the U.S. Many of you know these children are called “anchor babies.”
The State of California released last year they had paid out in benefits to illegals $5 billion. Can you imagine how much is being paid out across the entire country?
These are our tax dollars paying for these anchor babies across the United States and it’s time our Washington leadership closed this loophole, once and for all.
I request each person reading this to provide their name, city, state and zip code, to the e-mail address provided at the end of this letter, if you’re in agreement to revising the 14th Amendment to the Constitution to prohibit children born to illegal(s) in the United States becoming naturalized citizens of this country.
The plan is to send the names, city, state and zip code information of every person wanting this loophole closed to Senators Shelby and Sessions and Congressman Aderholt. Senator Shelby said he would support a change to the 14th Amendment.
We must take a firm stance to protect the precious tax dollars we pay so they will apply to our benefits we so deserve and not those of illegals in this great United States of America.
Please provide your position to benmcgo@bellsouth.net.
Thank you and God bless the United States of America, the State of Alabama and the City of Albertville.
Ben McGowan, Albertville
Never tires of snow in north Alabama
I can relate to a certain point on Jonathan Stinson’s (March 4) snow column.
Yes, it is cold and makes you miserable when you stay out in it too long. It is a hazard on the roads. It makes it hard to get to work or anywhere else you want to go during the storm. It can cause many hardships for people that are inexperienced in doing things in snow.
But probably the worst is if you don’t have to go to work of if you lose your electric power. And then there is the dirty slushy mess it leaves behind while melting.
But in my opinion, I think it is worth it. I will never tire of getting up and looking out the window and seeing my part of the world that has been whitewashed, especially before any tracks are made except for a dog or bird. There are no happier sounds than children playing in the snow.
We get a measurable snow fall about every 10 years and although, like Stinson, I have seen more snow fall this year than I have in my 63 years. I still love it.
Rayburn Hall,
Chattanooga, Tenn.
